Breonna Taylor was 26 years old and worked as an emergency room technician.

On 13th March, Breonna Taylor was shot multiple times in her home and killed by the Louisville police after a judge had signed a warrant for them to search her house because they believed one of the men they were investigating had picked up packages from the house.
The warrant was a ‘no-knock warrant’ which gave the police authority to enter the property without identifying themselves.

Breonna was in bed with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, at the time when the police forced entry into her home, Mr Walker fired at one of the police officers, unaware who was entering the home, and hit the officer in the leg, he was expected to make a full recovery, but was charged with attempted murder of a police officer until last month when the charges were dropped.

When Mr Walker fired his gun at the officers, the officers shot back multiple times.

They shot Breonna eight times whilst she was in bed, killing her.

The three officers involved were placed on administrative reassignment.

ERIC GARNER.

eric garner

ERIC GARNER was approached by police officers on 17th July 2014 in Staten Island, New York, and was being arrested on suspicion of selling single cigarettes from packets with no tax stamps.

When Eric told the officers he was tired of them harassing him, Officer Daniel Pantaleo attempted to arrest him. Eric put his arms up in the air and tried to resist arrest, but not in a violent manner. Officer Pantaleo put Eric into a banned chokehold and wrestled him to the ground when he continued  to hold Eric in the choke hold with multiple other officers surrounding him.

Eric Garner repeated ‘I CAN’T BREATHE’ 11 TIMES.

Officer Pantaleo ignored Eric’s cries of discomfort and continued to choke him, leading him to him losing consciousness for seven minutes. The Officers positioned Eric on his side and left him laying on the pavement waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

HE DIED APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR LATER IN HOSPITAL.

The medical examiner said the causes of Garners death were; compression of the neck, compression of the chest and prone positioning during physical restraint from the police. Asthma, diabetes, heart disease and obesity were also contributing factors.  Eric Garners death was ruled as Homicide (death caused by the actions of another person, but a crime was not necessarily committed) by the examiner.

Officer Daniel Pantaleo was put on desk duty on 20th July 2014 and was stripped of his badge and gun.
Second Officer Justin Damico was also put on desk duty but kept his badge and gun.

It wasn’t until August 2019 that Pantaleo was fired from his job.
No one was arrested or charged for his murder.

KALIEF BROWDER.

kalief

Kalief Browder, at the age of sixteen, was arrested for allegedly stealing someones backpack, he spent three years in jail for a crime he did not commit, whilst waiting to go to trail.

Kalief was walking home one night from a party with his friend when he was stopped by the police and was taken to the 48th precinct for questioning after being identified for stealing a backpack. He was told ‘He would probably get to go home’ but he didn’t. Kalief refused to plead guilty just to be able to go home, or to get a shorter sentence on Riker, and therefore he was punished by the system.

All the wrongdoings that happen day-to-day in our justice system, happened to Kalief on multiple occasions. In Kaliefs three years on Rikers he spent TWO of them in solitary confinement, and when he wasn’t in confinement he was being brutally jumped and attacked, not only by other inmates but by correctional officers too.

Whilst in Riker, in February 2012, he attempted suicide by hanging himself with his bed sheets that he had torn up and used to create a noose, where two officers watched him and ‘let him feel some pain’ before cutting him down, and beating him.
Browder then attempted suicide again just SIX MONTHS after getting out of Riker, in his home by hanging himself from his banister, he was then taken to the psychiatric ward at St, Barnabas.

The torture Kalief suffered through had a lasting effect on his mental health, which when on Rikers Island he asked for help for, because he could feel his metal stability deteriorating and did not get. This had an affect on how he behaved once he was out of Rikers and also made him to become extremely paranoid.

Kalief said that he was ‘cursed.’ When he was in the public eye he was targeted in the streets because people knew who he was and thought he had money. He was shot when he got into a fight with someone on the street one night, and he was also stabbed by a man after Kalief told him he did not want to talk about his case.

One day, one of Kalief’s brothers was attacked in the street, they beat him and stole his wallet. Kalief and his brother ended up getting into a fight and the police then arrested them. They were released but they had to attend a court hearing.

KALIEF BROWDER took his life on 6th JUNE 2015, just days before his court hearing, by hanging himself out of the window in his mothers home.

Although Kaliefs death was suicide, it stemmed from long lasting effects from the years solitary confinement and the metal and physical torture he went through whilst waiting to prove his innocence.

Kalief Browder was murdered by our justice system.
